Well finally after months of waiting and waiting, we got the kiln up and running! I fired my first 4 pieces which came out beautifully. She didn't fire right up to the highest temperature, but enough to fire the sculptures I'd put in. We have taken a look at her, well I say we, my fiance Jools has taken a look at her, as he's the engineer, and he says whoever did her elements last, only did one set, so they both need replacing. He's also repairing her lid and painting it for me with Hammerite heat resist paint, so she will look lovely and pretty again.
For an old kiln, she has done wonderfully after not being loved for so many years. I'm so very very happy.
However, the one thing I did find when using her, is she's not really big enough. It will take me forever and constant firing daily, to even try and get on top of all the sculptures that I've got waiting to go in and be fired, then glazed, then fired again, I'll be there till the end of the year, so my first big aim was to save and find a larger kiln. I don't want something huge, but something about 18" to 25" would be great for me.
Well I've not shared this anywhere else yet, as I am yet to collect her, but I've a new kiln coming. She was given to me at an amazing price, that we just couldn't say no to, after some talks, along with some furniture which will help me so much as I don't have much at all. Shes almost 18" wide and 27" high, approx. I'll give you more accurate details once we have her home. She wont be seen for a little while as I need to get a controller for her, and she needs wiring in to our main electric, but hopefully she'll be done quite quickly so I can get on.
Tonight, I've glazed my first of the four sculptures that I fired! I have started with the Rhino as I'm very limited on colours, but once I've got a few more colours I'll get on with the rest. I can't wait to paint the Okapi, it will look gorgeous once painted. They are all being painted in matt glaze apart from the Tree Frogs which will have a natural wet look to them in the wild.
I'll get photo's of them before they are fired again and after as I can't wait to share with you.
Keep watching, hopefully things will start to get interesting now.
Take care all, and remember find your passion and run with it.
Dee xx
