Perched in twilight stillness,
she keeps silent vigil over furrowed earth.
Eyes like ancient lanterns,
she watches, not as hunter alone,
but as witness—
to whispers in wheat,
to echoes in dusk.
Between the beating heart of the wild
and the pull of the unseen,
she waits.
The night breathes,
and she becomes its keeper.

The Barn Owl’s status varies globally but is generally stable or recovering in many areas, listed as “Least Concern” by the IUCN. In the UK, they are on the Green List (least concern) for conservation, having recovered from declines, though facing threats like habitat loss and roadkill, with conservation efforts (nest boxes) helping populations rebound. In Ireland, however, their range and population are still declining.

In the heart of the hollow, where ancient oaks grow,
The Keeper of the Seed watches seasons bestow.
With a coat of bright russet and ears tufted high,
He guards the great forest with a keen, watchful eye.

Tucked tight in his paws is a treasure of gold,
A single small acorn for the earth to enfold. He’s the ward of the woodland, the small forest king.
Protecting the life that the springtime will bring.

Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are native to the UK and Ireland but are classified as Endangered in England, Wales and across Great Britain, with an estimated population of under 30,000 in Britain. They face severe declines due to competition for food and habitat from invasive American grey squirrels, which also spread fatal squirrel pox.
While they are in a precarious state in Great Britain, some populations are stabilising due to conservation efforts. In areas where pine martens have returned, such as in Ireland, they have been shown to help control grey squirrel numbers, allowing red squirrels to make a comeback.
