In the heart of the hollow, where ancient oaks grow,
The Keeper of the Seed watches seasons bestow.
With a coat of bright russet and ears tufted high,
He guards the great forest with a keen, watchful eye.
Tucked tight in his paws is a treasure of gold,
A single small acorn for the earth to enfold. He’s the ward of the woodland, the small forest king.
Protecting the life that the springtime will bring.
Red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) are native to the UK and Ireland but are classified as Endangered in England, Wales and across Great Britain, with an estimated population of under 30,000 in Britain. They face severe declines due to competition for food and habitat from invasive American grey squirrels, which also spread fatal squirrel pox.
While they are in a precarious state in Great Britain, some populations are stabilising due to conservation efforts. In areas where pine martens have returned, such as in Ireland, they have been shown to help control grey squirrel numbers, allowing red squirrels to make a comeback.

Perched in twilight stillness,
she keeps silent vigil over furrowed earth.
Eyes like ancient lanterns,
she watches, not as hunter alone,
but as witness—
to whispers in wheat,
to echoes in dusk.
Between the beating heart of the wild
and the pull of the unseen,
she waits.
The night breathes,
and she becomes its keeper.

Cairngorm Capers
£110.00 + Postage
In heather’d glen where shadows play,
Two golden ghosts of dawn make way,
They twist and tumble, swift and sly,
Like laughter woven through the sky.
Among the pines their mischief sings,
A dance of fur and fleeting wings,
Wild hearts of Highland air and stone-
The Cairngorm Capers, free and grown.
The status of the pine marten varies significantly by region:
Pine marten status varies by location, with conservation efforts focused on re-establishment in parts of Britain where they are recovering. They are listed as Critically endangered in England and Wales due to historical persecution and habitat loss, while the population in Scotland is faring well and is considered least concern. Efforts include translocations, habitat management, and monitoring to support their recovery and increase their range.

Nose to nose, hearts aligned—they hold the weight of tomorrow between them.
He watches the horizon; she listens to the earth.
Together, they dream of a den, a life, a chance to continue.
In a world fraught with fading wilds, they stand as quiet defiance
not just lovers, but the last line of legacy.
This subspecies is critically endangered, with an estimated 18 to 39 individuals remaining in the wild. The foxes are found in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, primarily above 9,000 feet, but have been documented as low as 6,000 feet. The foxes face numerous threats, including habitat loss due to logging and livestock grazing, disturbance from recreational vehicles, and the presence of non-native foxes. Climate change is also a concern, as it may shrink their habitat.

Painted Companions

They met by the tide,
drawn by glint and silver flash—
but found something far rarer
in the quiet press of beaks
and the curl of one foot over another.
Love came softly,
wrapped in salt air and seabird laughter.
The herring were fleeting.
This? This was worth staying for.
A loving couple, he gifts her a mouse he has just caught. Total Winters Devotion.
The status of the Atlantic Puffin is Vulnerable on the global and Red List of Threatened Species meaning it is threatened with extinction and facing population declines due to factors like climate change. Their prey availability is shifting, with sand eels moving further north and less suitable fish like mackerel becoming more common. This has led to severe breeding failures and significant drops in puffin populations in the UK and other regions.
Seasons Are Changing

Upon the hills where cool winds sound,
A Mountain Hare is softly found.
Not yet of white, nor fully brown,
She wears the turn as nature’s gown.
A hare in between, not white, not brown,
Wearing the whispers of seasons’ gown.
She hides her face as the breezes play,
Half of the night, and half of the day.
Mountain hares are classified as Near Threatened in Great Britain, facing declining populations due to habitat loss and competition, though their numbers are fluctuating and can be cyclical. They received full legal protection in Scotland in 2021, meaning it’s an offence to kill or injure them without a specific licence.
